An international team led by researchers at the Koch Institute, the Broad Institute, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the National Cancer Institute has created nearly 700 well-documented patient-derived cancer models representing 25 cancer types.Senior author Jesse Boehm contributed to the decade-long Human Cancer Models Initiative, which created mostly organoid models that could help researchers identify new drug targets and test potential treatments for a broader range of cancers.

The Koch Institute joins the MIT community in mourning Nobel Laureate Susumu Tonegawa, an alumnus of the MIT Center for Cancer Research (our predecessor) and founding director of the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory. Driven by curiosity about fundamental questions in biology, Tonegawa made groundbreaking discoveries in immunology and neuroscience. Awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for uncovering the genetic basis of antibody diversity, he later transformed our understanding of how memories are formed, stored, and recalled.

While he notes rising challenges to research funding and attracting the best talent, he says he finds optimism in America's 250 year-old tradition of learning, discovering and inventing even through periods of adversity, such as world wars and depressions.Langer encourages early-career scientists to stay ambitious. Rather than pursuing research that is "incremental and secure," he recommends taking a risk on "something that might be a really big idea and could change the world."

“I’m just a big believer in the resilience of people. I look at the history of American innovation and education over the past 250 years, and it’s been spectacular. Plenty of times there’ve been setbacks. We’ve had world wars, you know, we’ve had depressions, and people keep persisting and keep learning. They keep discovering and they keep inventing. So that gives me a lot of cause for hope.”

A Strong First Year for New Manufacturing
